The High Life

Because sometimes there are those Monday mornings where you just want to fly away. Not just to a foreign land, but to a foreign time. Indeed, there was once a time when young children (my father included) wished with all their hearts to be pilots, and when being an air stewardess was oh so glamorous. I often wish somebody would come along and put the magic back to into air travel.

  3. Honestly, I'm tired of looking at overworked stewardesses and broke-in-the-face pilots. Also, I'm tired of people thinking that airplanes are an extension of their homes. I saw a man clip his toenails on a flight from Paris once. Classy. I'm all for raising airfare prices if it means that air travel returns to what it was 15 years ago.

  5. Hey Dapper. Great photos. I always love these vintage photos like this. It makes me wish I could have flown back in this era. I despise flying today. Hope your week has started off well. Take care. Cheers!

  10. Lovely photos. I feel the exact same way. I wish flying was glamorous again. I wish it was exotic and comfy and magical, like it used to be. And who knows, it might have inspired me to be an airline hostess with an adventurous and sexy life. Hehe.

  17. What about people dressing up to go on flights-- like in their best clothes, not slumpy tracksuits and velour zipups and plastic slippers or Uggs. You see a lot of that in air travel and it's a shame.

  20. I have often thought that airplanes are now air-buses. Some companies don't even assign seats anymore, it's just a free-for-all.

On the positive side I'm enjoying the fashion in the pics. My friend Meghan dressed as a 60s stewardess for Halloween: http://ryours.blogspot.com

  25. I still remember when being a flight attendant was every girls dream! It meant adventure, flying, wearing sharp outfits, being glamorous, helping others, and looking beautiful! I'm quite sure that it was my dream for about a year.... :)

  26. Mmm... so true I'd love to fly away right now.

I've been watching the old Prisoner t.v. series, and the colorful yet uniform outfits these stewardesses are wearing can't help but remind me of the outfits in "The Village".

  27. Me too... Those uniforms are so cool, I love the color combination of the last one!
Ryanair should really consider these! You know, as an alternative to those hideous blue and yellow uniforms. Ick.

I wish you a lovely day!

  30. I agree... I think if traveling were like it is depicted in these images, I'd enjoy it a lot more (I like being in foreign countries, I just don't like getting there). Especially if it's the budget airline variety. All those PSA uniforms are pretty amazing!

Hope you have a lovely week ahead :)

  31. there's such an elegance to the old looks, the glamour of it all is particularly refreshing in light of recent fashions.

So thank you for sharing this with us :)

p.s. I think we all wanted to be the bunny....I wore the head to the neighbour's house (where they were having a post Halloween party), and freaked them out :)

  34. I went to aviation school to become a stewardess and right now I'm not working as that I am a teacher but some of my friends that are working for the airlines have said that it isn't the glamorous life like in those days but I mean everythig changes and we just have to adapt it would be awesome to go back to that...

  35. Reminds me of Zooey's character in "Almost Famous;" they definitely used to make that life look so glamorous. It would be wonderful to get to travel all the time.

  36. LOL at the first line especially! SO true!

  37. I so agree with this post. We are missing glamour in our daily lives and I think people really need to make more effort in just trying to look good, for themselves and for others! If we all put those sweatpants away for just one more day, then our world would be a teeny bit more stylish ;)

  43. I love this post :) These uniforms really make me wish it was the 70s all over again, because then I would so ditch my english degree and become a stewardess. My mum was a stewardess in this era and she said the dress code was so much stricter than it is now - uniforms had to fit perfectly- if it bulged or sagged it had to be tailored or you were made to lose weight, unlike today, and there were even rules for hair and make-up too. Nowadays, I find it terrible to see stewardesses caked in terribly-applied make-up, with hair that isn't even tied up (unprofessional, darling!), and uniforms which are too tight or unshapely.
And omg I so want a pink/red dress like the one in the last picture!!! Ahhh ghsighihihjsgjs!!!

    all the best,
    Anna Jane xxx
