you tick, i-toc

I was lucky enough to win the i-toc watch giveaway by the wonderful Little Rus of Fashion Titbits. A huge thanks to her :)

Given my outfit today it would seem that Formal Friday shall have to wait until next week. I was feeling rather unwell yesterday and this morning, so in truth there was nothing more alluring than the call of a cosy winter sweater.

The sweater is actually a hand-knitted wool, with varied-weight yarns, which help to provide a rather interesting texture to the piece. Indeed the colour of the piece is actually a uniform natural wool, however thanks to the knitting process, it appears to be composed of various shades, due to where layers underneath show through. I suppose the knowledge of the individuality of the garment, of a unique knit and its resulting pattern, is in itself comforting to me. At some level it relates a visible reminder that skilled and dexterous hands once worked carefully upon the garment, and that is something which I truly appreciate.

Although the above photographs may not suggest so, the sleeves are actually long enough to cover the majority of my hands, with an equally lengthy body. I am not usually one to wear consciously long sleeves, however there is something about this sweater for which it just feels right. There is that inherent comfort factor in slightly over-sized clothing. Indeed for some reason my mind always makes the association to a baby being wrapped up in a large blanket and the warmth and comfort provided there. I suppose there are those days where we all feel the need to be wrapped up well before braving the outside world and all of its wonders.

I tried to keep my outfit relatively simple and understated, and indeed this also was the case in terms of the colour palette. Underneath the woolen sweater I wore a grey t-shirt, which I then coupled with a pair of fitted black jeans. I realise that I seldom wear much black, however I certainly appreciate the fact that there is the simple uniformity to the shade which is so beautifully versatile. I even went as far to pair my jeans with a pair of black hi-top canvas shoes. I really did like the visual cohesion which this helped to create, for it was essentially an unbroken finish.

Whilst I did wear bright red socks in order to compliment and match my new watch, it was not actually easily distinguishable unless one cared to look closely where the tongue of my shoes fell forward. In a way, the red socks were more for my appreciation than for any real outward expression. It was one of those details which was for the joy of the dresser, rather than the joy of the viewer, in the way that a colourful interior lining is created more for personal pleasure than to be viewed by all.

Apologies if there seems to have been a sudden proliferation of outfit posts as of late!

Ha, you and I both. You take the care to involve your audience in your thought process, whereas I'm more of a show, don't tell-type, so there is that

Good look. Another aspect I've been meaning to bring up is that shorn of your curls, your eyeframes, which are the smart vintage shape that I particularly like, can be more easily appreciated

Thanks for the recent comments, too - very kind

  18. I tried doing formal friday today, but I was having one of those days. I started out with a skirt, tights, and heels, changed into jeans and heels, but finally just ended up with jeans, a t-shirt, and nice flats.

  38. DK, I miss you and your posts so much! This was totally like a breath of fresh air :)

The sweater looks so cozy! I can hardly imagine how lovely it must feel while the air swiftly changes. There is something about garments that are hand-knitted. You can feel the attention it was once given and that in itself is comforting.
The watch is so striking too. It totally catches the eye, yet in a pleasant way that isn't shocking.

I reaaally hope you're doing well and that you feel better soon! :)
