Layers of Colour

I was thinking about outerwear this morning as I dressed for a check up with one of my doctors. In the winter months it seems that many are content to simply wear a thick, dark and rather unflattering coat due to the fact that it serves the purpose of protecting one from the elements. With something as important as a coat, something you will inevitably wear almost every day during the colder period, I have always thought that your choice should help finish your outfit, not cover it up.

Indeed it is often the important items that have almost daily usage, such as coats, gloves or even something such as spectacles, that many never seem to pay due attention to. Dichotomously, a purchase such a t-shirt or a single pair of trousers, that one may only wear every so often, seem to garner a greater amount of attention and thought in their choosing.

As such, rather than wearing my charcoal trench for the day, I decided that I wanted something with a little more colour and visual stimulus. I decided to wear a pink and blue flannel plaid shirt in the place of a jacket. So as not to expose my body too greatly to the chilled weather, I made sure to layer underneath, including a grey hooded top and pink long sleeve t-shirt to compliment the shirt jacket. Mirroring the casual look, I also wore a pair of faded jeans and a pair of Vans. Out of shot in the above photographs, I wore a pair of pink socks, which although hidden from the sight of others, apart perhaps from a quick flash when walking, finshed the look off for me.

  1. It's funny, but I always thought of coats as being kind of invisible ... never gave much thought to how incredibly visible they are! It must've been nice to mix up your winter walking look with some color. And I just love those shoes!

  4. I love that you focus on details that others miss. The flannel shirt really lends a cheerfulness to a wintry outfit, and the shoes just kick it.

  6. It was only last year when I realized that wearing my puffy black North Face jacket was just not the best way to make myself look (and feel) good!

I love this look, dear (as always - I do feel I'm being a bit redundant). The colors remind me of spring and make me happy :)

  7. My mom falls into that category...for sure. One of my favourite coats I own is completely unpractical...and doesn't keep me warm but I love it. Love the shirt!

  9. It's true! Something as mundane and routine as a coat is disregarded ... but it absolutely shouldn't be! Ahhh, I will never get over your coordinating socks X)

I think the hidden parts of my outfit can give just what it needs to be awesome. Usually, it just gives me the right attitude.

thanks much for the comment. yeah, I hate the smell of cabage rolls..I remember how horrible the smell was in the building. A lady used to make them..like once a month..thankfully..when we lived in Upstate New York.

  12. nice outfit.
I love the shoes! very creative.

When I wear coats I always tend to forget that I'm wearing them because they're such a staple when the weather's cold...it's kind of like that fact that you don't constantly think about the fact that you're wearing underwear, you just are, it's a staple.

  17. the shade of the two colors looks amazing together.
i believe in building your winter closet with one coat per color (one black, one navy, one gray, etc) and see which one you wear the most. if you are able to, then you can stock up with more than one for each color, or experiment with new colors. of course that at the end of the season you'd be pretty tired of wearing such thick garments...so experimenting with different possibilities as a flannel shirt, is more than welcome. it looks great and fresh.

  20. This is a really good, relevant post!
I tend to lose a lot of my outfit because my coat covers it up rather than adds to it.
Also often the elements which are really small or only you can notice make it the most complete.

I hope you are okay, you seem to have been making a lot of visits to the doctor lately.
