Free Flow

These are a selection of my favourite looks from the Spring 09 collection of New York based designer, Tim Hamilton.

Hamilton does not shy away from exploring a variety of veins in design within the collection. One is able to see both wide cut trousers and leggings, for example. Indeed, after rather a long period of super skinny jeans, it seems that wider leg and pleated front trousers are well overdue for a comeback. The relaxed and casual look trousers within the collection, are further emphasised with the general decision for light and organic fabrics for the looks. The main styles of slim cut trousers also help to provide a more smart look to the casual looks, more akin to suit cut trousers. This in itself helps to provide a contrast between the materials used and the style of trouser.

The light fabrics and style of trousers also compliment Hamilton's decision to use a deconstructed look for the the torso garments. There is something about the idea of letting the fabric fold and fall freely using a scoop/cowl neck that I find alluring from a construction point of view. Rather than the common fitted shirt and tailored jackets of past seasons, the relaxed layering and thin, almost unlined trenchs and blazers, provide a wonderful change. Admittedly, this trend has been quite common for a number of designers, however I feel it has still to be picked up on by many.

What are your thoughts on the collections?

  1. I'm loving this look...I think the third is my favorite :)
I very much like mixing it up - like doing a more suit cut on the pants and then the loose, deconstructed shirts and jackets - how fun!
    xo, dear.

  2. The shorts-with-boots looks don't send me, but I do like his use of belted jackets and loose necklines. It's an edgy and creative set to be sure.

  3. The first two tops are a bit Fred Perry, no? And is that a wrap cardigan I see? I don't know why men don't have wrap cardigans. Everyone should have one. Also, drop crotch shorts? Brilliant!!!

I'd say the fifth or the seventh is my favorite, probably. Although, all of the looks are amazing :D

  5. I love how Hamilton isn't afraid to use clothing that frames the body here, although I'm not infatuated with the color palette. But I love the first look; fifties button down with martial arts style pants!

  12. If I saw my boyfriend in the stripped shorts I might pause, but I love the collection as a whole. Like you, I like how this isn't just skinny pants and button-ups.

  13. Really inventive! I am loving the tuxedo looks, and all the outerwear (esp. the wraps - there aren't enough of those for men!). Not sure about that last trash bag one but it certainly is a trend these days for both menswear and womens pret-a-porter!
    Awesome post, DK!

  26. I LOVE everything about this collection - I want every piece to hang beautifully in my wardrobe. I particularly love his bold use of fabrics and knits. They compliment each other brilliantly and are brave, yet still very masculine. Great find...let's just hope the price tag isn't designer!
