"Looking Good...Four Eyes"

Glasses may be a practicality for many of us, yet there is no reason why they can not be a wonderful accessory. It occured to me that for the most part, glasses users tend only to have one or two pairs, usually with the second pair as a back up. However glasses can completely alter an outfit and look - therefore a wonderful and still somewhat unusual accessory to indulge in.

Since I was a small child I have always had an attraction to Clark Kent style glasses, most probably to do with the fact that although he looks like a 'nerd', when he dons his spandex suit he is the man 'faster than a speeding bullet'. I have also for the longest time wanted a pair of Johnny Depp's glasses, who has been my favourite actor since childhood (next to Will Smith - welcome to the Fresh Prince generation). Unfortunately I have discovered that the frames Johnny owns cost more than I can really hope to afford on my eyewear.

However looking around eBay and most clothing websites, it is easy to pick up exceedingly cheap classic style wayfarers. After a summer trend of these bright plastic sunglasses, the black and brown versions seem to have ended up in the bargain bucket. Although it is true that wayfarer sunglasses have been recently somewhat overexposed, what I adore about them, is how greatly the look changes when clear lenses are applied.

As such I am sorely tempted to buy some of these cheap and wonderful looking sunglasses and take them to an optician to get my prescription lenses put in. After some basic research I have discovered that the whole process ought to cost me no more than the price of a plain shirt on the high street - therefore not exactly a risky investment. The deal also seems the more sweet due to the fact that I wear my glasses all day every day. As for colour I have an affinity towards tortoise shell, or maybe a dark brown, and will have to avoid black as it never seems to suit my skin tone.

What are your thoughts?

  11. Oh gosh, while I understand that other people look sexy/cute in theirs, I don't like my glasses, it's contacts all the way!

  12. i have been thinking about doing this myself for a while (i need glasses for the occasional thing too) but always assumed it would be an expensive process. but now you seem to suggest otherwise, SO i may try it upon getting home! i love my wayfarer style sunglasses, and often think how much i'd like a pair of prescription glasses in a similar style. i'm looking forward to seeing how yours turn out! go for it! as you say, it's not a bad investment to make, especially at that low price! will any old optician do it for you?
and yes, definitely tortoiseshell, my favourite too :)

  16. Glasses can look so chic! It is interesting that something once looked down upon as "geeky" is now so highly praised by the fashion industry.

  19. I'm on the verge of giving my Revenge of the Nerds glasses the flick for the D&G frames. Everywhere I turn there's some 15 year old sporting fake frames..enough!

  24. I think those Clark Kents would suit you fantastically! I'm in love with my Vogue burgandy exterior/hot pink interior spectacles. And you're right, more people need to look at glasses as a wonderful opportunity to accessorize!

  28. great idea, i can't wait to see the results!
i have to say though, it all depends on how blind you are- i'm a -6 so no way i could get away with it, the lenses would be as thick as cokebottles! & for this reason i can't have cool sunnies either, unless i bother getting contacts... oh the humanity!

  29. Hmm, I don't think it'll be that cheap, mister. Lenses aren't particularly cheap and they cost even more when you have them made especially for a pair of glasses you bought elsewhere. Depends on the prescription too. x
